There's something admirable about one's striking out on their own and achieving a version of "off the grid" living.
Developing a self-sufficient mindset and reducing reliance on store-bought items absolutely comes with a great sense of satisfaction.
Solar panels, raised garden beds, low maintenance lawns and gardens. All great.
But when it comes to your health, how often do you eschew traditional over-the-counter remedies for something that could come from right in your own kitchen?
If you said "Me! Me! Me!", I'm impressed (and have some catching up to do myself).
But where to start?
With winter (and cold season) quickly approaching, we thought we'd review a popular and successful homemade recipe that could have you feeling better that ever in just the time it takes you to whip up the ingredients.
"The Best Homemade Cough Syrup, EVER"
That's quite the claim, isn't it?
This concoctions creator,
imthemaker from indestructibles was first exposed to this honey-based batch of goodness by a friend when a bad case of bronchitis had them down for the count with bronchitis.
The result? It's now their go to alternative to chemical cough syrups.
How do you make it? Glad you asked.
You'll want to gather up:
To Make the Syrup:
- Mix 8 tbsp honey with 3 tbsp warm tap water.
- Add in 1.5 tsp each of thyme, pepper and ginger.
- Whisk briskly for approximately two minutes (until texture is even and consistent).
- Lemon juice to taste (optional)
The author suggests 3-5 teaspoons a day when feeling under the weather, but a little more won't hurt.
But, if you are like me, you probably want to know...does it work??

"I have had a nagging cough for a few weeks and last I was starting to feel worse again instead of better. Saw this intractable and made it immediately. Amazing results!!!! This IS the BEST Homemade Cough Syrup EVER! Made mine with lemon juice instead of water, and put the herbs and pepper through my herb/coffee grinder. Absolutely love the taste and can't resist having repeated tastes."
